Kachori Dal Dhokli Recipe

Makes 5 Servings


For Kachori:

1 cup finely chopped cabbage

1 cup boiled mashed potatoes

1 tbsp oil

1 tbsp chopped green chillies

1 tbsp chopped garlic-ginger paste

1 tbsp sugar

1/2 tbsp garam masala

2 tbsp lemon juice

Salt to taste

For Dhokli:

2 cup whole wheat flour (ghav no lott)

2 tbsp besan flour (chana no lott)

1/2 tbsp turmeric powder

1/2 tbsp chilli powder

1/4 tsp asfoetida (hing)

1 tbsp oil

1/4 tbsp carom seeds (ajmo/ajwain)

Salt to taste

For Dal:

1 1/2 cup toovar dal

1 tbsp oil

1/4 tsp mustard seeds ( rai)

1/4 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)

8 curry leaves ( curry patta/mitho limbdo)

2 cloves ( lavang)

2 sticks cinnamon (taj)

1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)

5 kokum

5 tbsp jaggery (gur)

1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)

1 tbsp garam masala

1/2 tsp chilli powder

2 green chillies slit green chillies

1 tsp grated ginger (adrak)

2 tbsp peanuts

2 tsp coconut powder

salt to taste

For Garnishing:

5 tbsp finely chopped coriander

5 tbsp ghee

1/2 cup lemon juice


1. Clean, wash & drain the dal.

2. Wash 4 small potatoes and keep it on the lip of dal and coil it along with dal.

3. Combine the dal and 1½ cups of water in a pressure cooker and pressure cook for 3 whistles.

4. In a mean time, Combine all the ingredients for making dhokli in a bowl and knead into a firm dough using enough water.

For Kachori:

1. Heat a pan, ass t tbsp oil and saute chopped cabbage for a minute.

2. Clean, Wash & peel the boiled potatoes.

3. In a bowl, mash the potatoes, add cabbage and all the ingredients for making kachori and mix well to make a stuffing for kachori.

4. Now make small medium thick roti from dhokli dough, with a spoon put a small stuffing in the centre of the roti.

5. Fold from all the side to make a kachori with you hand.

6. Repeat for rest of the stuffing and keep kachori aside.

For Dhokli:

1. Divide the remaining dough in equal parts.

2. Roll out into thin chapattis and cut each chapati into diamond or square shapes and keep aside.

For Dal:

1. Once the cooker is cooled, take dal in a big deep vessel and blend it well & Boil it on a low flame.

2. Add turmeric powder, salt, Asafoetida (hing), chopped ginger, chopped chillies, jaggery, peanuts,  5 curry leaves & kokum to the dal.

3. Once dal starts boiling, add kachoris one by one slowly into the dal, once kachori is added, add dhokli in it.

4. Sprinkle Chilli powder, garam masala & Coconut powder on the dal dhokli.

4. In a small pan heat 1 tbsp oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon, curry leaves it in.

5. Once it crackles , pour it on the dal dhokli and mix slowly once.

6. Pour it in dishes, garnish it with a tsp ghee , 1/2 tsp lemon juice & few chopped coriander leaves.


You can even try making kachoris with peas & freshly grated coconut.

Note: One can use this stuffing instead of using potato-cabbage recipe.

1. Boil 2 cups peas and chop them well, add 1 cup freshly grated coconut in it.

2. Add 1 tbsp garlic-ginger paste, 1 tbsp chopped chillies, sugar-salt to taste, 1 tbsp garam masala & 1 tbsp lemon juice.

3. Mix it well.

For making jain recipe, you can make stuffing using raw boiled bananas instead of potatoes & not using garlic-ginger.

    DO we need to fry the kachoris before adding to dal or just fill the dough with stuffing and add without frying?

      We don’t need to fry the kachori, when the dal starts boiling add kachori’s one by one in the boiling dal and then add dhokli.
